Malting systems

Malting systems were historically part of the range of products offered by SCHULZ and their production was documented beginning around 1880.  After decades of concentration processes, on-site malting is once again relevant in light of the ongoing trend towards regionalization in brewing. Particularly in the case of emotive products, words such as “origin” and “local” are play an ever-important role. Malt production from grains grown in the immediate surrounding region has gained traction. Regional approaches are becoming increasingly popular. Nevertheless, credibility and sincerity—mainly within the food industry—is at the forefront of consumer concerns. The production of organic products takes this concept a step further. Slogans such as “From the grain to the glass” take on a deeper meaning when the brewers themselves adopt a hands-on role in the brewing process. Now even commercial malters have a system in-house with which they can refine small batches into custom malts. Building on the successful history of the brewpub, Schulz took on the topic of micro-malting. The resulting SCHULZ malting system is composed of an external soaking funnel and a germination-kilning combo drum. The drum technology enables an enormous spectrum of possible malting variations.

EXTERNAL CONICAL STEEP VESSEL INCLUDES:

  • Revolving grooves for catching any overflow of floating barley
  • Circulation above the dispensing plate
  • Pneumatic circulation and aeration
  • COexhaust

HOMOGENOUS MALT: EVERY GRAIN COUNTS!

The ability to both germinate and kiln in a single drum eliminates the need to transfer the green malt. Time-consuming cleaning of the germination vessel can be completely omitted. The rootlets remain properly intact for the rapid removal of water during the drying stage.
Intelligent control engineering enables a double sided rotation of the drum regardless of the rotation angle. The specific fill angle for the parallel alignment of the rack is adjustable. Fully automated steeping, germination, and kilning operations.
Air conditioning unit with cooling coil, air humidifier, indirect air heating, and an optional heat recovery feature.

A SUITABLE QUANTITY FOR ANY OPERATION VOLUME REQUIREMENTS:

  • Batch sizes of  2, 5 and 10 tons
  • Variable installation options for one or two levels
  • Also available as a compact malting system for a max. of 5 tons with pre-assembled transport equipment
